Uses

Patterns and Tying Techniques - Typically, Bleached Elk Hair is used for wings and tails on dry flies. Because the hair is hollow it has natural buoyancy built-in. It can be flared to create upright wings on dry flies or used as a tailing material on dry flies. Bleached Elk Hair can be substituted wherever hair such as deer hair or Mule deer hair is called for.

Bleached Elk Hair vs Deer Body Hair - Bleached Elk Hair tends to be slightly stiffer and longer then Deer Body Hair. It also tends to be more hollow and easier to flair then deer hair. Deer Body Hair is shorter and finer then Elk Hair. It is a softer material that does not flair as much as Elk Hair. Deer Body Hair is available in multiple colors whereas Elk Hair is available in either bleached or natural. Choose Bleached Elk Hair for wings on dry flies where buoyancy and visibility are paramount.
