Bleached Elk hair is best known for being the main material in the Elk Hair Caddis Dry Fly. A hollow and buoyant natural material, it is perfect for wings and tails on a host of other dry flies as well. The hair is bleached a light color which makes it easily seen from a distance and in low light. Hareline’s Bleached Elk Hair is the perfect high-quality hair for all your hair wing and Caddis patterns.
Patterns and Tying Techniques - Typically, Bleached Elk Hair is used for wings and tails on dry flies. Because the hair is hollow it has natural buoyancy built-in. It can be flared to create upright wings on dry flies or used as a tailing material on dry flies. Bleached Elk Hair can be substituted wherever hair such as deer hair or Mule deer hair is called for.
Bleached Elk Hair vs Deer Body Hair - Bleached Elk Hair tends to be slightly stiffer and longer then Deer Body Hair. It also tends to be more hollow and easier to flair then deer hair. Deer Body Hair is shorter and finer then Elk Hair. It is a softer material that does not flair as much as Elk Hair. Deer Body Hair is available in multiple colors whereas Elk Hair is available in either bleached or natural. Choose Bleached Elk Hair for wings on dry flies where buoyancy and visibility are paramount. Choose Deer Body Hair when you want a finer hair that doesn't flair as much or when you need a specific color.
Dry Flies - Bleached Elk Hair is the material of choice when you are tying an Elk Hair Caddis. It can be used as both wing and tail on Stimulators, too. It can also be spun for use on flies such as a Goddard Caddis or a Dave’s Hopper.
Approximate Dimensions - The hair comes on a 2x2 1/2 inch patch. The hair itself is roughly 2 inches long.
